About the O'Sullivan Cup

the Sullivan Cup

The club stages the annual O’Sullivan Cup, a mixed épée event.

The O’Sullivan Cup stems from a donation to the club by David O’Sullivan, father-in-law of club member Paul (Red) Redmond in 1989.

At that stage the club had just moved to Llanishen Leisure Centre, and was finding its feet, running independently of Barrie Diamond’s Fencing Class in Whitchurch High School, and David’s contribution to club funds was most welcome !

The club decided to put the money back into the sport, rather than immediate club expenditure.  In 1989 and 1990 it presented a prize of £25 to the most promising fencer at the Welsh Open.

With the remainder purchased the O’Sullivan Cup, which it determined to award at a suitable annual event.   Looking for a gap in the market, and the fencing calendar, the club resolved that this should be a 'One Hit', Mixed Epée event, and the rest, as they say, is history ...
